ABOUT WHITING

Whiting is a city located on the southern shores of Lake Michigan, born of the railroads and the Standard Oil Company in 1889.

Whiting offers a variety of activities from dining and shopping to special events. If you're a history lover, check out the gorgeous Carnegie Building which houses the Whiting Library or the Community Center, given as a gift to Whiting by John D. Rockefeller and is now the Crossroads YMCA.

And don't forget to catch a movie while in town. The Hoosier Theatre resides downtown and is the only remaining "movie palace" in Northwest Indiana built in 1924 and its interior is a "must see!"

It’s a community that cherishes its history and continues to celebrate its traditions and diversity.  Whiting is a walkable community that offers something for everyone.  There are beautiful old homes on streets named after city founders as well as newly constructed homes.  Whiting specializes in unique shops, family owned businesses, restaurants, with festivals, summer concerts, parades, the Whiting Oilmen baseball team, and from June through Labor Day, the Whoa Zone, a unique water experience located in Lake Michigan.  Whiting is ideally located 30 minutes from downtown Chicago.  

ABOUT ROBERTSDALE

Robertsdale is an adjoining neighborhood to Whiting and the northern most neighborhood in Hammond.  Although part of the city of Hammond, the boundaries are blurred and Whiting-Robertsdale share the same zip code.  Whiting-Robertsdale exists as one big, happy community.

You will find historic homes and neighborhoods in Robertsdale as well as some new construction.  While there isn’t a downtown area in this neighborhood, you will find restaurants, businesses and many outdoor activities such as concerts, bike rides and races, extensive biking/walking trails and even cross-country ski trails for winter enthusiasts.  It is within walking distance of its neighbor, Whiting, and like Whiting, it is also located about 30 minutes from downtown Chicago.
